Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU) was organized in 1936. The first head of the department was Prof.,  MD, PhD Vladimir I. Spassky (from 1936 to 1955). From 1956 to 1975 this post was occupied by MD, PhD, Professor  Gabdulla H. Kudoyarov. From 1975 to 1986 the department was headed by Prof.  MD PhD Radomes G.Kudoyarov. From 1987 to 2011 the position of the department head was held by Prof., MD, PhD Marat T. Aznabayev.

In 1996 a course in Ophthalmology of Postgraduate Education Institute (PEI) was organized at the department, which was transformed in 2003 into a separate department – the Department of Ophthalmology with the course in Othorhinolaryngology PEI (Head - Prof. Bulat M. Aznabayev).

In September 2011 two departments merged and formed the Department of Ophthalmology with PEI course. Bulat M. Aznabayev, MD, PhD, General Director of «Optimedservis» Scientific Medical Association was elected as its head.

State-of-the-art teaching aids (iPad-class computers, multimedia equipment, diagnostic instruments, sets of tables, etc) are used at the department. It is equipped with a «Wetlab» simulation room on ultrasound cataract surgery (surgery microscopes, phacoemulsificators, facial casts, sets of microsurgical instruments). The system of multimedia interactive teaching is created alongside with distance learning courses conducted at the department.

The department takes one of the leading positions at Bashkir State Medical University on key indicators of educational, scientific research and medical work.

The department is engaged in the following research areas:

- Ultrasound technologies in cataract surgery, glaucoma, refractive and vitreoretinal pathology, diseases of lacrimal apparatus;

- Development and practical application of ophthalmic surgical equipment, innovative medical facilities;

- Modern aspects of diagnosis and treatment of patients with congenital eye disorders;

- Early diagnostic methods of ophthalmic oncopathology;

- Developing new methods for diagnosis and treatment of infectious and inflammatory eye diseases and eye traumas.
