BSMU gathers students from Medical Universities to compete for the medal in the Olympics "I am a Professional"

"I am a Professional" is a large new-format educational Olympics for students of different specialties: Technics, Humanities and Sciences.

The experts from the leading Russian universities and largest companies made tasks for the participants. The aim is to test professional knowledge but not abstract erudition. The best participants will receive prizes and benefits for admission to master's degree program or post-graduate school and prove their worth before employers. The Olympics questions are addressing senior students. But everyone can test himself and check his level of experience. Participationinthecompetitionisfreeforeveryone.

The Olympics consists of several stages. Correspondence stage was online.

Internal stage on "Dentistry" and "General Medicine" will be held in five main universities of the country, one of which is BSMU. It will be held on 27 January and will be attended by 15 students from our university and 86 students from universities of Samara, Yekaterinburg, Orenburg, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk and Moscow, which will assess skills using an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

The final stage of "General Medicine" will take place at BSMU simulation center (2 Shafiev Str., Ufa) and there will be the following stations:

1. Basic life support complex.

2. Emergency medical care.

3. Medical history at the primary outpatient medical appointment.

4. Station manipulation – I.V. injection.

The final stage of "Dentistry" will be held in the simulation center "Dentistry" (45/1 Zaki Validi Str., Ufa) and there will be the following stations:

1. Dissection of the cavity in a permanent tooth.

2. The filling of carious cavities in a permanent tooth.

3. Conducting infiltration anesthesia in the treatment of a permanent tooth.

4. The removal of a tooth.

Every participant of the internal stage passes four stations from the list.

The evaluation of the internal stage is in points; one can get maximum 25 points for each station. Thus, the maximum score in the internal stage of the Olympics "I am a Professional" is 100 points.

Time limit for each station is 8.5 - 10 minutes. After time passed, the task is suspended. The level of participants’ training is estimated by Expert assessment, where they fix the fact of fulfilment or partial performance/non-performance of action. Theinternalstageisaudioandvideorecorded.

The jury are leading experts of the above-mentioned areas, chief physicians, heads of hospitals and representatives from professional associations.

The fundamental tenet of medicine – "Do no harm!". Doctor may do harm to the patient by any action. Accordingly, the more actions the greater risk. Unreasonable, unprofessional and poorly worked-out actions of the medical staff are a real danger for the patient. Absence of any action is dangerous, but it causes less harm than wrong action. To demonstrate your level of training inaction is not enough.
