BSMU hosted the face-to-face stage of “I am a Professional” Olympiad

On 13 February the Bashkir State Medical University became the center of the face-to-face final stage of the Olympiad "I am a Professional" for students of medical universities from Yekaterinburg, Samara, Saratov, Tyumen, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk and Ufa. Students who successfully passed the qualifying stage of online testing attended the face-to-face stage: 93 participants of the specialty "General Medicine and Pediatrics", 54 of the specialty "Dentistry" and 23 of the specialty "Pharmacy".

"I am a Professional" is a large-scale educational Olympiad of a new format for students of different specialties: Technics, Humanities and Sciences. Experts from leading Russian universities and major companies of the country drew up the tasks for participants. The Olympiad checks professional knowledge not abstract erudition. The Olympiad is held in two stages: distance testing and face-to-face stage, which takes place at one of the universities-co-organizers. BSMU is one of such universities.

The Olympiad began with a grand opening. Valentin Pavlov, rector of BSMU, corresponding member of RAS, MD Rinat Nagaev, chief physician of G. G. Kuvatov hospital, MD Rustem Akhmetshin, head physician of the Republic Children Clinical Hospital, attended it.

    - BSMU is one of the main universities of the Olympiad, and we are glad to welcome students from different cities of Russia to our University. These students are those who not only have the necessary theoretical training, but also practical skills. Every year BSMU is a supplier of personnel for large metropolitan clinics, and this is a certain problem for our region, which the Olympiad helps to solve – the winners will be able to enter the residency on favorable terms and gain a foothold in the republican medical institutions. Senior doctors and head of departments of Ufa leading clinics are not by chance the jury today - this is another opportunity for them today to note the best of our students and include them in the personnel reserve of the healthcare system of the Republic of Bashkortostan, - said Valentin Pavlov.

At the final stage of the Olympiad, the participants demonstrated their practical skills: "Olympians" were asked according to the specialty to carry out emergency medical care on mannequins, to take physiological delivery, to remove a tooth, to cure a carious cavity, to prepare a drug. The final stage was held at BSMU United Center of Simulation-Based Training, where future graduates will undergo primary accreditation.

  - The list of tasks was known, however, which will fall at the Olympiad is a matter of luck. Nevertheless, it is important how participants cope with excitement, their ability to self – control - the necessary qualities for future professionals. One of the most difficult parts for participants is the communicative one, where experts evaluate how students communicate with patients. With all these tasks, students will meet at the primary accreditation, so participation in the Olympiad "I am a Professional" will certainly help to prepare for the upcoming exams,- commented dean of the faculty of General Medicine, Professor Damir Valishin.

Experts - chief physicians and heads of departments of city clinics evaluated the work of students. Concurrently, video and audio recordings were made. All the materials will be transferred to the Central headquarters in Moscow, where the winners will be determined. Medalists, winners and prize-winners of the Olympiad will be awarded with medals, cash prizes and will receive benefits for admission to residency and graduate school. The winners will be invited to internships in major Russian clinics, research centers, their data will be placed in the national database "I am a Professional" - the register of students, which will have access to HR-specialists and recruiters of leading companies in the country.

Participants who successfully passed the correspondence stage and the competition of motivation letters, from 31 January to 2 February took part in the winter school "Sechenov Pro" of the Olympiad "I am a Professional" at Sechenov University. BSMU ten students among the hundred best medical students of Russia were participants of the Winter school.

  – For me, participation in the Olympiad is a test of my theoretical knowledge and practical skills, and assessment of personal qualities – ability to work in training, stress resistance during participation. All together today creates a picture of the personality of the future specialist. I would like to pass successfully the face-to-face stage to get all the privileges available to the winners, - shared his impressions the 6th year student of the faculty of Pediatrics from Chelyabinsk State Medical Academy, Alexander Borodin.

Last year, Alfiya Yumagulova, a student of the faculty of Dentistry of BSMU, became the silver medalist of the Olympiad, more: http://bashgmu.ru/en/news/10752/ . We are waiting for victories from our students this year!
