It is impossible not to mention the teachers who gave many years of their lives to the Department of Hospital Surgery.

Associate Professor Grigory Pavlovich Kornilaev (at the department from 1951 to 1987) was dean of the Institute for 10 years, for several years – executive secretary of the admissions committee, and at the department – permanent head teacher. During the years of his work, he was the first specialist in the republic in the field of abdominal hernia surgery.

Associate Professor Rem Ivanovich Titov (at the department from 1968 to 2000) was engaged in liver and pancreatic surgery all the years of his work, was the first head of the Department of General Surgery at the future university clinic (City Clinical Hospital No. 6), chief surgeon of Ufa. After retiring, G.P. Kornilaeva was in charge of the academic part of the department.

Associate Professor Rostislav Petrovich Kozlenko (at the Department from 1972 to 2010) is one of the founders of thoracic and cardiac surgery in the Republic of Bashkortostan, headed the first Department of thoracic surgery in the Republic of Belarus (1965-1972), opened and was the first head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery of the State Clinical Hospital No. 6 (Bashkir Interregional Cardiac Surgery Center), was engaged in heart and lung surgery, esophagus, stomach; the last 30 years – only surgical correction of congenital and acquired heart defects.

During the leadership of the department by Professor N.G. Gataullin, the subject of scientific research has significantly expanded, training of students in subordination has been organized and the system of primary training of surgeons in internship has been worked out. It was during these years that doctoral and candidate dissertations were completed and successfully defended in various fields of surgery: F.F. Mukhamedrahimov ("On the issue of lung rheography in mitral heart defects and chronic pulmonary suppuration", 1967), R.F.Mukhamedrahimov ("Local hypothermia in the prevention of postoperative peritoneal adhesions", 1971), A.F. Vlasov ("Postoperative iatrogenic foreign bodies", 1985), S.N. Hunafin ("Adhesive peritoneal disease", 1986), V.V. Brachevym (Complex method of diagnosis, surgical treatment and prevention of adhesive peritoneal disease", 1990), P.G. Kornilaev ("Ways to improve the results of treatment of patients with postoperative ventral hernias", 1990) , etc.

As mentioned above, in 1936 the clinical base of the department was a small surgical department of Hospital No. 2 ("Old Ufa"). Subsequently, in 1959, the department was deployed in the 2nd surgical department of the RCB, and then - in the surgical, traumatology and thoracic departments of the city clinical Hospital No. 1 (Tukaeva, 48). Branches of the department were surgical departments of city hospitals №8, №9, №10, №13. The total bed stock of the clinic's bases in these years reached 600. In 1972, the department received a new base – the surgical building of the 6th City Clinical Hospital with 315 beds. This multidisciplinary hospital was built with the active participation of N.G. Gataullin. A few years after the construction of the surgical building, on the initiative and according to the projects of the clinic's management, an educational and lecture building was built, the lecture hall of which has 300 seats.

Currently, the multidisciplinary city clinical Hospital No. 6 has acquired the status of a BSMU clinic, the director of which is one of the best and experienced clinicians, a talented surgeon, Professor A.A. Bakirov.

The depth of scientific developments, their practical value and thematic focus created prerequisites for the organization, with the active participation of the department, of a number of centers on the basis of the BSMU Clinic. The Russian Federal Center for Plastic Abdominal Surgery and the Bashkir Republican Center for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Patients with Adhesive Peritoneal Disease, the city center for providing surgical care to patients with injuries and diseases of the chest organs, where intensive scientific development of thoracic surgery problems was carried out, successfully functioned.

The cardiac surgery center, previously located on the basis of GKB No. 6, needed modern operating rooms, a separate intensive care unit, modern artificial circulation devices, anesthesia machines, etc. In 2001, construction was completed and the Bashkir Center for Cardiovascular Surgery at the republican cardiodispanser for 120 beds was put into operation. The head of the center was Professor V.V. Plechev, who passed all the steps of the surgical ladder in the hospital surgery clinic. Currently, this center is part of the Department of Hospital Surgery, where half of its employees work fully. The created conditions for teaching students of 5-6 courses of the university allow them to master all modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, as well as engage in research work.

Among the former employees and students of the department, one should recall the names of such major health care organizers as Minister G.H. Kamalov (former assistant), Minister Z.Y. Murtazin (former clinical resident), Head of the Department of Faculty Surgery V.G. Sakhautdinov (former assistant), Head of the Department of Oncology Professor Sh.Kh. Gantsev (former clinical resident), head of Department of General Surgery Professor M.A. Nartailakov (former clinical resident). All of them admit their involvement in the Department of Hospital Surgery. We, in turn, are proud of their brilliant successes.

From 1993 to the present day, the Department of Hospital Surgery of BSMU is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Doctor of the Republic of Bashkortostan Professor Vladimir Vyacheslavovich Plechev. V.V. Plechev's main research interests and developments concern the areas of abdominal and cardiovascular surgery. V.V. Plechev, being a successor of the N.G. Gataullin school, worked intensively on improving methods of prevention and treatment of adhesive peritoneal disease. This scientific work entitled "A comprehensive method of diagnosis, surgical treatment and prevention of adhesive peritoneal disease" became a doctoral dissertation and was successfully defended in 1990. In 2004, for a monograph devoted to adhesive peritoneal disease, Professors V.V. Plechev, V.M. Timerbulatov and R.Z. Latypov were awarded the scientific award of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences – the A.N. Bakulev Prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

V.V. Brachevym mastered and introduced into the daily practice of the Bashkir Cardiac Surgery Center a new branch of cardiovascular surgery - coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In our republic, the first two CABG operations were performed in 1998 by Professor V.V. Brachyov. The suture material "Abactolate" created by him and the immunostimulator "Immunreg" have received recognition on the scale of the Russian Federation.

At the present time, the general directions of scientific research of the staff of the Department of Hospital Surgery are: prevention and surgical treatment of diseases of the cardiovascular system; prevention, diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the abdominal cavity (peritoneal adhesions, postoperative ventral hernias, gastroduodenal bleeding, diseases of the hepato-pancreato-duodenal zone); surgical treatment of diseases of the thoracic cavity and mediastinum; prevention and treatment of purulent-septic complications in a surgical clinic.

During the existence of the department, its employees defended 69 candidate's and 24 doctoral dissertations, received 92 patents for inventions, published 43 monographs on various sections of clinical surgery, published more than 1,200 scientific papers.

The department trains 5th and 6th year students of the Faculty of Medicine, clinical residents and graduate students. The department has created: a laboratory for the development of practical skills, a computer class for current and control testing, thematic classrooms with all necessary equipment and visual aids.

The department has a full educational and methodological complex on the discipline "Surgical diseases", the department is equipped with modern computer and multimedia equipment. The lecture course was published in the form of a textbook "Selected chapters of hospital surgery", a multimedia set of all lectures given in the course was compiled, and a lecture on the topic "Adhesive peritoneal disease" was included in the course of lectures on surgical diseases published by the RSMU for the anniversary of academician V.S.Savelyev. The full educational and methodical complex is posted on the educational portal of BSMU.

The department is a graduate and annually participates in the preparation and conduct of IGAV.
