The Biochemistry Department was founded in 1934. The first Head of Department was Prof. Mikhail Evgen’evich Gubarev who moved from Saratov University. In 1942, the Department was renamed as «Department of Biologic and Organic Chemistry». From 1945 to 1953, Department was headed by Prof. I.V. Vakulenko who made a great contributions to biochemistry of microorganisms. In 1947, he was awarded the title of Honored master of sciences of Russian SFSR. In the years 1977 - 2016, Prof. Felix Khusainovich Kamilov was the head of the Department. At that time, health effects caused by chemical and environmental pollutants on the immune system and blood were established. In 1983, the department was renamed the Department of Biochemistry and biological chemistry. The research emphasis was towards clinical and ecological biochemistry. In 1985, the Department hosted Inter-Republican workshop "Fundamental sciences for healthcare" dedicated to the problems of theoretical medicine. The staff also organized the All-Russian conference of combustiologists in 1990. In 1995-2003, Biochemistry Department was divided into Department of Biological Chemistry (Headed by Prof. F. Kh. Kamilov) and Department of Bioorganic and Clinical Chemistry (Headed by Prof. Eduard Gazalievich Davletov). In 2001, the Department successfully applied for the grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) "Spreading experience of male reproductive health risk assessment in environmentally neglected region" (supervised by Shamil Narimanovich Galimov). From 2016 the Biochemistry Department is headed by Prof. Shamil Narimanovich Galimov, the dean of Faculty of Preventive Medicine and Microbiology (since 2012). Under his supervision the following projects were realized investigation of the molecular aspects of Speroton (L-carnitin+zinc+vitamin E+vitamin B9+selenium) effect on male fertility in collaboration with Republic Perinatal Center (Ufa); development of innovative technologies of male infertility treatment" (sponsored by Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan). In 2018, Prof. S.N. Galimov won competition "Higher Education Innovations-2018" at the Sechenov Biomedical International Summit (SIBS 2018) in Moscow. He also received funding for the project "Search for fertility molecular markers associated with idiopathic male infertility".

The department teaches in the following disciplines and specialties:

- biochemistry (general medicine, pediatric, preventive medicine, dental, pharmaceutical faculty);

- variable course Functional biochemistry (general medicine, preventive medicine faculty)

- special course in Enzymology (specialty 06.03.01 – Biology)

Postgraduate students study at the department specialty 03.01.04 – Biochemistry.

The entire educational process at the department is provided with a full set of educational and methodological documentation. Educational and methodological complexes are posted on the educational portal.

Due to the entry into force of Professional Standards, changes have been made to the work programs of disciplines, taking into account the labor functions necessary for the implementation of the following in subsequent professional activity

The assessment of students' knowledge at the department is carried out in accordance with the Regulations on the ongoing monitoring of academic performance and current certification of students at the BSMU of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Appendix 18 to Order N99 of 30.08.2017).

The student's point-rating assessment in the academic discipline is carried out according to a 4-point system and is determined on the basis of assessments obtained for all types of student's activities (average annual assessment on the subject based on current and boundary control, as well as intermediate certification).

Requirements for knowledge control:

The current control of knowledge is carried out at each lesson by:

1. Testing using multiple choice tests, compliance tests, test schemes that control knowledge of metabolic pathways

2. Teacher interviews students with discussion of the most important issues of topics.

3. Solving professionally-oriented situational tasks.

4. Assessment of the performance of tasks for extracurricular independent work.

Midterm control of knowledge is carried out by passing a colloquium on a section (module) of the discipline, including computer testing, interview with a teacher, solving situational tasks, evaluating the implementation of the SRS module.

Intermediate certification is an exam that takes place in 3 stages:

Stage 1 – delivery of practical skills in the discipline: knowledge of basic biochemical constants, the principle of determination and the clinical and diagnostic value of the main biochemical indicators used in clinical practice.

Stage 2 – examination computer testing, including 100 test tasks.

Evaluation criteria for examination computer testing:

71-80% of correct answers – "satisfactory"

81-90% - "good"

More than 90% correct answer - "excellent"

Stage 3 – oral exam. Answers to the questions of the examination ticket (3 questions) and solving situational problems.

Oral exam. The answer is evaluated according to a 4-point system. The assessment is determined based on the following criteria:

- the level of formation of general cultural, general professional and professional competencies, the formation of which is aimed at the study of the discipline Biochemistry;

- the amount of knowledge in biochemistry that the student has;

- understanding of the essence of biochemical processes and their interrelations;

- the ability to use theoretical knowledge of biochemistry to solve professionally-oriented situational tasks.

The main directions of educational and methodological work of the department:

· preparation of new textbooks for independent work of students,

· development of training and control tests and situational tasks,

· development of training and monitoring computer programs,

· development of illustrative material for classes and lectures,

development of a fund of evaluation tools to control the formation of competencies,

educational and methodical products.

The main direction is the creation of textbooks for classroom and extracurricular independent work of students.

The scientific and research activities at the Department of Biological Chemistry are focused on the following areas:

1) molecular genetics and cell biology of fertility disorders caused by environmental factors (Principal investigator, MD, PhD, Dr. habil. in Medicine, Prof. Sh. N. Galimov);

2) the pathogenetic mechanisms by which chemical agents exposure on bone tissue metabolism and development of correction methods (Principal investigator, MD, PhD, Dr. habil. in Medicine, Prof. F. Kh. Kamilov);

3) correction of iodine deficiency by using iodine-containing Nano composites (Principal investigator, MD, PhD, Dr. habil. in Medicine, Prof. F. Kh. Kamilov).

The level of research carried out by the Department is high, evidenced by the number of publications appearing in peer-reviewed journals. Employees of the department publish their works in international scientific journals included in Scopus and Web of Sience (e.g., Pharmaceutical Chemistry Journal, ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering, Biomedical and Pharmacology Journal, Environmental Science Pollution Research, Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology, National Journal of Physiology, Pharmacy and Pharmacology and etc.). Since 2013, 2 Doctoral theses defended (Dr. Sc. is the next degree after PhD in Russia), 11 monographs and 151 research papers published and 14 patent applications approved (14 patents granted).

Over the last years, employees have participated in the Sechenov International Biomedical Summit (SIBS-2017, SIBS-2018) in Moscow, XXVII Annual International Conference of the RAHR «Reproductive Technologies Today and Tomorrow», 2nd International Conference in Pharmacology: From Cellular Processes to Drug Targets in Riga, Latvia, 9th All-Russian scientific and practical conference with international participation “Molecular Diagnostics” and etc.

Every year, Department of Biological Chemistry organizes the Olympiad "Biochemist of BSMU". It is held among students of General Medicine, Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine faculties. The winners of the Olympiad go on to complete in the transregional competition "Biochemist"
