The Department of Hygiene is one of the oldest at the Bashkir State Medical University. It was organized in 1935 on the basis of the sanitary-hygienic and bacteriological departments of the Ufa Sanitary-Bacteriological Institute. In the 1940s, the department moved to the biological (now main) building of the medical institute, where it is located to the present day. During the Great Patriotic War, the department housed the educational units of the Moscow Medical Institute. THEM. Sechenov, close cooperation with whom continues to this day.
The first head of the department (1935 – 1952) was Professor N.F. Emelyanov. Under his leadership, a lot of work was done to organize the educational process, and scientific research was conducted on environmental hygiene.
From 1952 to 1967 The department was headed by associate professor Smorodintseva O.A. During this period, important research for practical health care was carried out in the field of water supply hygiene and school hygiene. The working conditions and morbidity rates of workers at oil refineries built on the territory of the republic began to be studied.
For 25 years (1967 - 1993), the department was headed by Honored Scientist of the BASSR, Professor Ya.N. Askarova. The department continued to be equipped with new instruments and equipment, thematic classrooms and scientific laboratories (spectral, water, etc.) were deployed. One of the leading areas of scientific research was the study of the problem of microelementosis in various regions of the republic. The severity of the still urgent task of preventing iodine deficiency in the Bashkir Trans-Urals was significantly reduced thanks to the implementation of scientific results into practice.
In 1992–1995 The department was headed by Professor Akhmadeev V.M. He organized the teaching of “Fundamentals of Ecology and Nature Conservation”, was a member of the Coordinating Educational and Methodological Council on Environmental Education in medical and pharmaceutical institutes of the Ministry of Health of the SSR of the Russian Federation, and co-author of the “Interdepartmental Program on Environmental Education in Medical Universities”. His scientific research is related to solving issues of occupational hygiene, municipal hygiene, and human ecology. Akhmadeev V.M. participated in conducting examinations through the State Committee of the Republic of Bashkortostan for Rational Environmental Management, provided advisory assistance to employees of related departments and the sanitary-epidemiological service. He has published more than 120 works, of which 1 textbook, 2 monographs, 5 teaching aids, and a course of lectures.
From 1995–2020 The department was headed by Professor T.R. Zulkarnaev. He pays great attention to improving teaching students the basics of hygiene, methods of disease prevention and introducing a healthy lifestyle; is developing accelerated methods for substantiating hygienic standards using modern computer technologies for studying the toxicological properties of chemicals. For this purpose, a specialized laboratory was created at the department, where new antioxidants, anthelmintic drugs and other groups of compounds were analyzed. Zulkarnaev T.R. – medical hygienist of the highest category, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Bashkortostan, worked for a long time as the chief freelance nutritionist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Bashkortostan .
Since September 2020, the Department of Hygiene with the course of medical and preventive care of the IDPO is headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate
Professor Mochalkin P.A. He is also the chief physician of the Republican Disinfection Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The department has classrooms for thematic training modules: food hygiene, municipal hygiene. 6 monitoring and 2 training programs have been developed.
The department has a system for recording current knowledge: daily individual survey of students, daily test control of the initial and final level of knowledge, solving situational problems. At the end of the practical lesson, the students’ workbooks were checked, errors pointed out by the teacher were corrected, and then signed. Based on the results of the practical lesson, 3 grades were given (1st grade for input control and SRO, 3rd for practical work, 3rd for output control).
The department has developed a regulation on a rating system for the disciplines “Hygiene”, “General Hygiene”, “Communal Hygiene”, “Food Hygiene”, “Hygiene of Children and Adolescents”, “Fundamentals of Ecology and Nature Conservation”, “Human Ecology”, “Protection” consumer rights”, “Organization of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service”, “Organization of medical prevention and hygienic education”, “Hygiene and epidemiology of emergency situations”, “hygienic foundations of health formation”, “Sanitary and hygienic laboratory research”, “Social hygiene monitoring”, “Hygienic basics of health formation.” Interim certification of students consists of test control, practical skills testing (solving situational problems) and an interview on questions.
Interactive forms of learning are widely used in the educational process:
a) business games - replaying the situation in microgroups followed by discussion b) role-playing games.
Providing an electronic information and educational environment
The department has organized an electronic educational environment, including the provision of methodological material on the department’s educational portal. Students are provided with a calendar training schedule and work programs in the following specialties: general medicine, pediatrics, medical and preventive care, and dentistry. Students can familiarize themselves with the class schedule, calendar and thematic plan of lectures and practical classes, and the schedule for making up missed classes. In the educational and methodological materials section, students receive information about the criteria for assessing knowledge in the discipline and about the scoring system. In addition, students have the opportunity to use lectures in PowerPoint format and guidelines for practical exercises with an information block.
