The group of oncologists received the Award of the Russian Federation Government for a unique development

The prize of the Russian Federation Government in the field of science and technology was awarded for the development, production and implementation of domestic radioactive sources for contact radiation therapy on Oncology. Russian scientists, doctors and engineers have developed domestic radioactive sources containing iodine-125, cobalt-60 and iridium-192 for holding the contact radiation therapy. Today, they developed technology for production of these sources and their industrial production.

"We can treat about 200 people a year with prostate cancer using the innovative method," – said General Director of National Medical Research Radiological Center (FSBI NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation), academician of RAS, Andrey Kaprin, after presenting prize to the group of oncologists. Vsevolod Galkin, Sergey Ivanov, Oleg Karyakin, Vladimir Solodkoy, Vera Titova, Andrew Goverdovsky, Nerozin Nicholay, Vladimir Shapovalov, Michael Kheteev also received the prize.

Taking into account the high cost of overseas radioactive sources, until recently, a large number of patients, requiring this type of treatment, could not get it. Hardware base has also been improved. On the basis of import-substituting production of radioactive sources the scientists developed the medical technologies of low-dose and high-dose contact radiation therapy: interstitial, intracavitary and application. Medical technologies of contact radiotherapy sources release have been developed. Medical institutions from thirteen regions of the Russian Federation and two neighboring countries have implemented and started to use these technologies. Implementation of the developed medical technology allowed to improve the effectiveness of treatment, to provide early medical and social rehabilitation and quality of life for oncology patients. Moreover, it contributed to achieve high indicators of economic efficiency. There are no analogues of this invention in the world.

Development and manufacturing was carried out by FSBI NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, FSBI RSRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, SSC RF A.I.Leipunsky IPE, JSC "NIITFA", state Corporation "Rosatom".

The Minister of education of the Russian Federation Olga Vasilyeva presented the prize of the Government to the group of NMRRC oncologists.

At the end of the ceremony, the Chairman of the Government Dmitry Medvedev greeted the awardees and noted the scientists’ contribution into development of national science, technology and medicine.
