BSMU Clinic held the first in Russia robotic evisceration of the pelvic floor

9 February BSMU rector, corresponding member of RAS, Valentin Pavlov, and the Head of the Oncology Department at BSMU Clinic, Marat Urmantsev, conducted the first in Russia robot-assisted pelvic floor evisceration in BSMU Clinic. The operation was performed to a young patient with uterine gang cancer of stage four, who underwent a course of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but no improvement had been observed. With the use of robotic surgery, it has become possible to heal such patients, and it gives them the opportunity to continue the life after severe disease stages. Thanks to more accurate and coordinated work of doctors and surgical robots, it becomes possible nowadays.

In January 2018, the surgical system da Vinci was purchased for BSMU Clinic. That has become a new round of surgical care development in our country. Da Vinci system allows to conduct robot-assisted operations, which are characterized by better visualization and more precise technique due to a greater degree of freedom of manipulation.

Da Vinci system has a wide application in various fields of medicine: cardiovascular surgery, pulmonology, gastrosurgery, neurosurgery, oncology, including the most difficult cases, when it is necessary to remove the system of organs, as in the case of evisceration of the pelvic organs. Pelvic evisceration is a rare operation that is carried out with complete defeat of the organs, during which all the contents of the pelvis are removed.

It should be noted that since 2010 BSMU Clinic has performed pelvic evisceration. In 2014 it was the first time when reconstructive surgery with pelvic floor plastic femoral muscle-fascial flap was carried out in the Oncology Department of BSMU Clinic by the same team of doctors.
