On 6 June for the first time in Russia, a unique operation on laparoscopic treatment of long ureteral stricture with the use of the patient's cheek mucosa was performed in BSMU Clinic. Valentin N. Pavlov, the rector of BSMU, corresponding member of RAS, Professor Adele Izmailov, and urologist Amir Farganov carried out the operation.
This type of surgery is widely used in the United States. In Russia this surgery is used in reconstructive plastic surgery on the ureter in most cases using intestinal autograft. According to recent studies, the use of buccal mucosal autograft with extended ureteral contractions is more effective. It is associated with a relatively low level of early and late postoperative complications, low recurrence rate.
The operation was performed on a 71-year-old patient. He entered the department with a diagnosis of urolithiasis. Having got additional examination in the Clinic, an extended stricture was found - a site of narrowing of the left ureter. The Concilium of doctors decided to carry out treatment in two stages: at the first stage, ureter stones were removed - contact lithotripsy of the ureter with stenting was performed. At the second stage, laparoscopic plastic surgery of the ureter was performed using a flap of the cheek mucosa. The operation lasted more than three hours; the patient has already been transferred to the department and feels satisfactory.
