Doctors of the BSMU Clinic maternity hospital performed in Bashkortostan a unique organ-preserving operation for the placenta ingrowth

Placenta accretion is one of the most severe pregnancy complications, leading to massive blood loss and removal of the uterus. This type of complication is often diagnosed with repeated pregnancies after cesarean section. Doctors of the BSMU Clinic maternity hospital helped a woman with an ingrown placenta to give birth to a healthy baby and at the same time saved the uterus.

During the examination in the women's clinic of the patient, ultrasound showed placenta previa, and doctors suspected its ingrowth. After magnetic resonance imaging, the diagnosis was confirmed. The patient's previous pregnancy ended in operative delivery. This clinical case is an indicator of successful delivery of a patient by cesarean section with full presentation and placenta ingrowing into the area of the scar on the uterus.

During the operation, the method of intraoperative ultrasound diagnostics was used to determine the exact location of the placental ingrowth site, followed by excision of the ingrowth site and metroplasty. This approach made it possible to achieve minimal blood loss, optimal surgical intervention time, reduce the length of hospitalization and favorable obstetric and perinatal pregnancy outcomes, as well as preserve the patient's menstrual and reproductive functions.

Obstetricians and gynecologists continue to improve the technique of performing this operation and in 2020 ten organ-preserving operations have already been performed for this pathology.

In most cases, such operations in Russia currently end with the removal of the uterus.

It is important to note that the success of this operation was achieved thanks to the well-coordinated work of the BSMU Clinic team. The operation was performed by Alfiya Yashchuk, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology of BSMU, associate Professor Ilnur Musin, Alexey Biryukov, head of the Maternity department, Zagrat Mazhidov, head of the Pregnancy Pathology department, Edward Berg, doctor of the Pregnancy Pathology department, anesthesiologist Pavel Mikhailov, the team of urologists and cardiovascular surgeons.
