Students of Bashkir State Medical University on practical training in Nanchang University

As part of the cooperation between Bashkir State Medical University and Nanchang University, students from Ufa did practical training in Nanchang University from August, 30th to September, 15th with the purpose of developing academic mobility. Zarina Zagydullina, Elvira Khazeyeva, Eleonora Yakhina, Ivan Gromenko and Igor Dmitriyev, 5year BSMU students of General medicine and Pediatrics departments, participated in the onthejob training program at the premises of the first Nanchang university clinic.

We did our training in Nanchang largest medical facility located in the city centre – The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Five young Englishspeaking hospital residents accompanied each of us as our supervisors during the whole internship.
On the first day there was organized a meeting with Li Baoming, the Rector of the Medicine department. There we planned not only our work in the clinic, but also how to get to know local culture and traditions.
On the next day a conference was held in Nanchang University clinic with the faculty and Shi Zhong, chief administrator of the clinic. There we were told about the peculiarities of Chinese education system and the management of medical facilities.
Every day for two weeks we were working in different clinic departments. In the morning we did morning rounds together with the doctors and discussed further treatment; then we looked after the patients and watched demonstration operations in surgical departments. For example, we attended coronary artery stenting in the cardiac surgery unit, ovariectomies, metrectomies and vulvectomies in the gynecological surgery unit, colectomies and thyroidectomies in the general
surgical unit. We also got acquainted with the vascular, neurological and orthopedic surgery units. It was very interesting to see with our own eyes how the robotassisted suegical system “Da Vinci” works. It consists of two blocks: control terminal where the surgeon operates and a robot arm. They do not use equipment manufactured in China in this clinic. All the equipment there is made by famous European and American companies.
There is a Traditional Chinese Medicine in this clinic and it was especially memorable. We had the opportunity to try out some of the techniques: acupuncture (or needle therapy), auriculotherapy and vacuum therapy with medical suction cups. The acupuncture session was carried out by an experienced doctor. As opposed to auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture), it was totally painless, even though a thin needle is being stuck several centimetres deep into you. They put special applicators on the reflexogenic zones of our helices, we had to wear them for a few days. Every 30 minutes we pressed the applicators which was quite painful. It is hard to say how efficient was the treatment because you have to go through the whole course, not just a couple of procedures. Traditional Chinese Medicine
is very popular amongst the locals, and not only amongst the elderly.
On the last day of our practical training we had a meeting with Chinese students, where we delivered a report on Russian medical education system. It should be noted that locals were always wellwishing and showed interest, many wanted to take a picture with us. During our stay in China we saw the sights of Nanchang Pavilion of Prince Teng, Aixi Lake, Qiushui Square, of Beijing Forbidden City and experienced local cuisine and cultural traditions.
Although our internship lasted for only two weeks, we saw a lot. We had the opportunity to learn and gain a priceless experience.
