On April 17, BSMU Department of Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery hosted the University inter-department Olympiad in Surgery among Students

Every year, up to 80 students of the 3-6 years of the university participate in this event. During the training period, the students improve their surgical skills and learn important theoretical aspects. Moreover the Olympiad is an opportunity to demonstrate the results of their long work and painstaking training. Only the most diligent participants take prizes. It is no secret that the winners of the past years nowadays manage to successfully work at the forefront of surgery. The participants came to this choice consciously, and the Olympiad in their student years strengthened motivation and helped the university to prepare valuable personnel.

The current participants also managed to perform brilliantly!

The students were evaluated by respected experts-heads of departments of surgical disciplines. In their student days, they participated in similar Olympiads, just as they do now. That is why they opened the Olympics and gave a lot of valuable advice to the participants and gave them confidence!

Experts of the Olympiad were Vladimir V. Plechev, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Chief Cardio-angiosurgeon of the Republic of Bashkortostan, organizer of the first heart transplant in Bashkortostan; Mazhit A. Nartailakov, Honored Doctor of the Republic of Bashkortostan and the Russian Federation, Honored Scientist, surgeon who performed the first liver transplant in the Republic of Bashkortostan; Alexander A. Tsyglin, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor; prof. Ildar F. Sufiyarov, Dean of the Faculty of Pediatrics, MD, and others.

Nine teams took part in the Olympiad:

1. The team of the Department of Topographic Anatomy and Operative Surgery.

2. The International team.

3. The team of the Department of Urology with the course of IAPE.

4. The team of the Department of Pediatric Surgery.

5. The team of the Department of General Surgery.

6. The team of the Department of Faculty Surgery.

7. The team of the Department of Surgical Diseases and New Technologies.

8. The team of the Department of Neurosurgery.

9. The team of the Department of Traumatology.

The teams competed in the following competitions:

• Knitting surgical knots.
• Removing and putting on PPE.
• Tracheal intubation.
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Tool contest.
• Photo-video contest.
• Coronary artery bypass grafting.
• Inter-intestinal anastomosis.
• Laparoscopic appendectomy.
• Laparoscopic suturing of the intestinal wound.

The students coped with the tasks perfectly. The best participants became:

Third prize - team of the Department of Neurosurgery under the leadership of Associate Professor Alexey B. Gekhtman
