Magnification force: the new research microscope of the BSMU laboratory opens up unique opportunities for the study of biological materials
In the laboratory of cell cultures of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine of the Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia, scientists use new advanced equipment to study biological objects and materials - a scanning electron microscope - SEM, KYKY-EM6900LV. In Russia, about 5 scientific groups from St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and other cities of the country are engaged in similar studies using EMS. And now new competencies are mastered and applied in Ufa - at the Bashkir State Medical University.
*New equipment was purchased for scientific research within the framework of projects of the federal program "Priority-2030."
The microscope will allow researchers to reach a new level: scientists explain that using this device, objects that were previously unavailable for research will be studied.
Thanks to the new equipment, scientists at Bashkir State Medical University study in more detail the surfaces of cells, tissues, extracellular fibers and any other materials. The microscope increases the samples studied by 5,000 times. So, for example, the thickness of a DNA molecule is 2 nanometers, while a microscope allows you to see objects of 4.5-6 nanometers, i.e. the device allows you to view particles comparable in size to only three molecules on the surface.
"There are breakthrough regenerative medicine projects underway at our university. And we need to know and understand how live, for example, spider webs, alloplant fibers or implant materials interact with living cells. And in order to see the place of contact of a living cell with the material that we are going to use for regeneration, this microscope will help us a lot. We will be able to see the surface of this material along with the cells located on it. This task is now feasible, all this will improve the quality and efficiency of our research, both scientific and practical, "says Ksenia Danilko, head of the laboratory of cell cultures at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine of the Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia.
The microscope is equipped with a system for maintaining not only a high vacuum, but also a low one, which makes it possible to work with various kinds of biological samples containing a lot of water.
In addition to the microscope itself, equipment was purchased for preparing samples for electron microscopy: an automatic spraying unit for creating metal coatings and a drying unit at a critical point:
"To work with biological materials, you need to make them conductive, for example, by applying a heavy metal to the surface. As a rule, this task is performed by a precious metal - platinum, palladium, gold, sometimes carbon. In this case, a thin layer of gold is used to conduct research in the equipment. With the advent of a new microscope, we can see cells of various origins, shapes on the surface of even opaque materials, "says Ksenia Danilko, head of the cell culture laboratory at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine of the Bashkir State Medical University of the Russian Ministry of Health.
Many scientific teams of the University are interested in using the new equipment. The new EMS will expand the range of research and attract new partners in research projects. So, with the help of a microscope, scientists have begun a new more detailed study of various types of biomaterials "Alloplant" - this will allow to further study its regenerating abilities and expand the possibilities of application in clinical personalized medicine. Currently, the results of the work of researchers in this area are used in ophthalmology, plastic surgery, surgical dentistry, and regenerative medicine.
Now scientists of the Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia are actively interacting within the framework of the project to create dental implants and surgical dentistry with the Clinical Dental Clinic of the Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia:
"We work with domestic implant manufacturers. This microscope allows you to more accurately see the nature of the interaction of cells with the surface of a specially treated implant, which is of interest to our industrial partners. And to their order, we adapt the implant coverage in order to improve clinical results: accelerate the implant engraftment period and more reliable functioning. This topic is extremely in demand, because the task of import substitution in dentistry is quite acute. Existing developed domestic implants not only do not lose, but also in some aspects are ahead of imported ones, - comments Artem Izosimov, head of the Department of Surgical Dentistry of the Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia.
An EMS weighing about a ton is installed on the second floor of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine of the Bashkir State Medical University in the cell culture laboratory and occupies a whole room. Scientists are confident that the new equipment will significantly improve the quality of research in the field of medical and biological sciences. The use of such equipment can contribute to improving the quality of research and their competitiveness in the international arena. Publications in highly rated foreign journals of Q1-Q2 level can lead to greater recognition of the work of scientists, attracting funding and opportunities for cooperation at the global level.
