From 26 to 29 August 2025, the annual meeting of the European Ophthalmic Epidemiological Consortium (E3) was held in Dijon (France). The Ufa Eye Research Institute of Bashkir State Medical University was presented at the meeting by the Head of the Department of Ophthalmological and Medical Epidemiology Gyulli Mukharramovna Kazakbaeva.
The event brought together leading epidemiologists, ophthalmologists, biostatisticians and public health researchers from universities and research centers in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The main objective of the meeting was to coordinate efforts to study the prevalence, risk factors and socioeconomic burden of major eye diseases in the European population. The work of the consortium was organized in the format of plenary meetings and scientific symposia.
Key topics of the event:
· Studies linking retinal microangiopathy to cerebrovascular disease;
· Updates on large cohort studies and registries. In particular, Professor Jost Jonas (Institute of Myopia, France) presented the results of population studies of the South Urals conducted by the Ufa Eye Research Institute of Bashkir State Medical University;
· Discussion of current data on rates of vision loss, prognosis in various ophthalmic pathologies, risk stratification and impact of diseases on patients' quality of life (driving, risk of blindness);
· Particular attention was paid to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods in ophthalmology and epidemiology.
As a part of the consortium, negotiations were successfully held with leading European research groups, including the University of Queens (Belfast, UK), the Institute of Clinical Science (UK), the University of Bonn (Germany), the Erasmus University Medical Center (Netherlands) and the Institute of Myopia (France). Following the meetings, agreements were concluded on collaborative scientific research.
