Staff of the Ophthalmology Department of BSMU won prizes and shared expertise at the international APAO forum in Hong Kong

From February 5 to 8, 2026, staff members of the Ophthalmology Department of Bashkir State Medical University (BSMU) — Head of the Department T. R. Mukhamadeev, Professor B. M. Aznabaev, and Associate Professor T. I. Dibaev — took part in the congress of the Asian Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), held in Hong Kong (PRC).

The APAO congress is one of the largest international ophthalmology forums in the Asia‑Pacific region. The scientific program was multidisciplinary and covered a wide range of current topics in modern ophthalmology: a medical equipment exhibition, retinology, surgery of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, artificial intelligence technologies, imaging techniques, pharmacotherapy, and innovative developments.

Specialists from various countries took part in the congress, including numerous representatives from the Russian Federation. Our delegates got acquainted with key global trends in ophthalmology, paying special attention to the diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal pathology: new imaging techniques, including high‑speed OCT, scanning laser ophthalmoscopes with adaptive optics for in vivo retinal microscopy, navigation laser systems, as well as innovations such as gene therapy and AI in surgery.

In addition to the scientific program, Head of the Department T. R. Mukhamadeev and Associate Professor T. I. Dibaev took part in a charity run that brought together more than 500 ophthalmologists from around the world. Following the competition, T. R. Mukhamadeev won first place among all participants and was awarded by APAO President Professor Tetsuro Oshika and Congress President Professor Jason Yam.
