BSMU students participated in clinical reviews of neurological patients at the University of Toronto

Since 2015, our University (the initiator and coordinator of this program at BSMU is Professor Leyla Akhmadeeva) has been participating in the international online project NIRVE, organized by the University of Toronto (Canada). Monthly clinical analyzes of neurological patients for young specialists are held, neuroradiological comparisons, unusual, rare and classic patients from the practice of doctors from different countries are discussed.

At the academic year-ending meeting of NIRVE on June 4, 2026, the patient was presented by a 4th year student of the English-speaking faculty of BSMU Swaraj Pund. The organizers and participants noted the high level of training of our speaker and a thorough discussion of the patient, whom Swaraj, together with the head of the scientific club of the Department of Neurology Fatiha Makhmutova, observed at the BSMU Clinic. In addition to describing the clinical case, Swaraj shared with the audience information from the most modern international publications about this rare neurodegenerative disease - progressive supranuclear palsy, noting that it was first described by neurologists from the University of Toronto, which gave the eponymic name to this condition - Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome.

Svaraj and his head, Professor Leila Akhmadeeva, told the youth professional community about BSMU and its achievements, expressing sincere gratitude for the opportunity to speak and be among the two medical universities in Russia invited to participate in this program.

Three more 4th year students of the English-speaking medical faculty of BSMU, who dream of becoming highly qualified doctors and show interest in neurology, joined to support Swaraj and discuss the patient.

The continuation of the NIRVE program, as well as meetings of the student scientific circle (SNK) of the Department of Neurology, is scheduled for September 2026. The circle also today held the final meeting in the current 2025/2026 academic year at the Institute of Fundamental Medicine together with the morphological laboratory.

All students interested in working further in neurology within the framework of SNC and NIRVE can ask questions by writing to the email address Lrahmadeeva@bashgmu.ru
