Urologists-oncologists of the BSMU Clinic performed an organ-preserving operation using a robotic system. For a 42-year-old man with congenital aplasia of the right kidney, this was the only chance to preserve the organ and quality of life.
The 42-year-old patient was admitted to the Clinic of the Bashkir State Medical University for planned preparation for hip replacement. The man had no complaints about his kidneys. However, a preoperative examination revealed what could go unnoticed: computed tomography showed an intraparenchymal mass in the central segment of the left kidney measuring 35 × 24 mm.
The diagnosis sounded like a verdict: cancer of a single kidney. From birth, the patient had a developmental anomaly, aplasia of the right kidney. There is simply no body to "hedge."
The case required a non-standard solution. Removing the kidney would mean lifelong hemodialysis and a complete overhaul of the 42-year-old's life.
The operation was performed by an urologist-oncologist, doctor of medical sciences, head of the oncology department of the BSMU Clinic Marat Fayazovich Urmantsev and an oncologist, candidate of medical sciences Rita Flaridovna Gilmanova. The anesthesiological allowance was provided by the anesthesiologist - resuscitator Davletshina Elvera Mudarisovna. A robotic surgical system was used - it allows you to work in hard-to-reach areas with jewelry accuracy, minimizing the risk of damage to healthy tissues.
Recall that the Center for Robotic Surgery has been operating at the BSMU Clinic for 8 years. Robotic surgery at the BSMU Clinic allows you to perform organ-preserving operations where until recently radical organ removal was required.
Thanks to timely diagnosis and an interdisciplinary approach to treatment, the prognosis for the patient is assessed as favorable. The tumor was removed, the function of a single kidney was preserved.
