Head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics with the course of IDPO - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Laureate of the International Humanitarian Award ICPF, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus Chuikin Sergey Vasilyevich.

The course of dentistry for children was organized at the Bashkir State Medical Institute named after the 15th anniversary of the Komsomol in 1981. At that time, the foundations of the educational and methodological base for the specialty "Dentistry" were laid. In 1985, the course was transformed into the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

The first head of the department was PhD, associate Professor Viktor Fedorovich Tatarinov. In 1991, Sergey Vasilyevich Chuikin, MD, Professor, Honored Doctor of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was elected head of the Department by competition.

The peculiarity of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics with the IDPO course is its versatility. The department teaches the following disciplines: "Prevention and communal dentistry", "Pediatric dentistry", "Pediatric maxillofacial surgery", "Orthodontics" for students of the Faculty of Dentistry and "Dentistry" for students of the Faculty of Pediatrics, elective disciplines: "Modern methods of teeth whitening", "Phytopreparations in the prevention of dental diseases".

Currently, the department has a significant scientific and pedagogical potential of the Faculty of Dentistry of BSMU – Professor Chuikin S.V., Professor Davletshin N.A., Professor Akmalova G.M., associate professors: Makusheva N.V., Akatieva G.G., Snetkova T.V., Egorova E.G., Aflakhanova G.R., Chuikin O.S.; assistants, Ph.D. Shtanko M.I., acc. Over the years of the department's existence, research works were carried out in the main areas of the specialty, which were issued in the form of dissertations. It is important that the research was carried out taking into account the regional peculiarities of the Republic of Bashkortostan and is relevant and of great practical importance.

The main scientific directions of the department are dictated by the needs of practical healthcare — prevention and communal dentistry, treatment and rehabilitation of children with congenital and acquired pathology of the maxillofacial region.

The department has been holding leading positions at the university in research work for a number of years. The result of scientific research is the publication by the staff of the department of more than 1800 scientific papers, 35 inventions, 55 monographs, participation in international, All-Russian, Republican congresses and conferences, exhibitions.

Professor Chuikin S.V. created a scientific school "Rehabilitation of children with congenital pathology of the maxillofacial region". For his great scientific contribution to solving the problems of treatment of cleft lip and palate, Professor S.V. Chuikin was awarded the Humanitarian Prize of the International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation (Dallas, USA) in 2015.

Studies are being conducted to study histohematic barriers in dentistry.

Dissertations were defended under the guidance of the head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics with the course of IDPO, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MD Professor Chuikin S.V..

In 2011, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics was awarded the diploma "Golden Department of Russia" for services to the development of domestic education.

The department has published textbooks and methodological recommendations, including 25 with the stamp of the UMO on medical and pharmaceutical education of Russian universities, recommended for teaching students at the dental faculties of our country. In 2017 , GEOTAR published a National Guide to Pediatric Therapeutic Dentistry in collaboration with Prof.Chuikin S.V., and assoc.Akatieva G.G.

In 2019, GEOTAR published the National Manual on Maxillofacial Surgery in collaboration with Prof.Chuikin S.V. At the department created educational and methodological complexes for students of the dental faculty of full-time and part-time education, pediatric faculty. The department has classrooms, 2 phantom classrooms and a computer lab.

The student scientific circle is actively functioning. Students annually take part in a student conference at the university, make presentations at medical universities in Russia, take part in international student Olympiads, and take prizes.

The staff of the department takes an active part in the life of the dental faculty and the university. The department has a long and serious way to improve the training of dental personnel of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
