Department name: Department of General Surgery with courses transplantology and radiation diagnostics IAPE BSMU. The department is part of the Faculty of Medicine.

General information about the department:

The Department of General Surgery is one of the first clinical departments of the Bashkir State Medical Institute, was organized in 1935.

Currently, 3rd year students of the medical and medical-prophylactic faculties of BSMU are studying at the department. In addition, at the department, residents and graduate students undergo postgraduate training in the following specialties: surgery, radiology and ultrasound diagnostics.

The staff of the department consists of people who have extensive practical experience in medicine and combine work at the department with work in practical healthcare. The teaching staff includes 5 professors, 11 associate professors and 13 assistants. 5 employees of the department have the scientific degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences, 15 have the scientific degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences.

Educational and methodological activities of the department

At the Department of General Surgery, with courses transplantology and radiation diagnostics of IAPE BSMU, the discipline «General Surgery» is taught for third-year students of the Faculty of Medicine, the discipline «Surgical Diseases» for the third year of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine.

Since 1993, the course of general surgery has been taught using the textbook by V.K. Gostishchev «General Surgery» (sixth edition – 2022), lecture material «General Surgery» (M.A. Nartailakov et al., Ufa, second edition - 2015) and multimedia manuals developed by the department staff and based on their own clinical experience.

Residency and postgraduate training is carried out in the areas of «Surgery», «Ultrasound Diagnostics» and «Radiology» and annually attracts applicants from among both graduates of medical universities and practical healthcare doctors from the Republics of Bashkortostan and other regions of Russia.

Department staff

The teaching staff of the Department of General Surgery includes doctors with extensive practical experience and who combine teaching with work in the departments of gastrosurgery, purulent surgery, coloproctology, vascular surgery, the department of reconstructive and plastic surgery, the department of angiosurgery, the department of x-ray endovascular surgery, etc.

Methodologies developed by the department staff together with practical healthcare workers:

•method of stenting of malignant bile duct strictures;

•method of long-term percutaneous, transhepatic frame drainage of benign bile duct strictures;

•method of preoperative portal vein embolization for malignant liver tumors;

•method of angioplasty of occlusive lesions of the tibial arteries in diabetic foot in patients with diabetes mellitus;

•aspiration method thrombectomy from dialysis shunts;

• technique of transjugular, intrahepatic shunting (TIPS) for liver cirrhosis with a stent graft.
