HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Among the first six departments of the medical institute opened in our republic in 1932 it was the department of Inorganic Chemistry (that was the name then of the department of General Chemistry). The first head of the department was I.F. Sushinsky. Due to the illness of Associate Professor I.F. Sushinsky in 1933, two departments - Biological Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry - were united; the united department was headed by Associate Professor E.M. Gubarev, invited from Saratov University. In 1935, the two departments were separated, and the department of Inorganic Chemistry was headed by assistant I.Z. Ilyasov. In those years, there were no chemists with an academic degree at the medical institute. M.A. Abdulmenov, Sh.Kh. Mescherova, S.G. Khamidova worked as assistants. A small team of the department provided the educational process in chemical disciplines to the first and second years students.

In the first years of the existence of the medical institute, training was theoretical. Only in 1937 an experimental laboratory was opened and students began to take practical courses. Employees of the department were involved in the development of scientific topics, preparation of dissertations for academic degrees. So, I.Z. Ilyasov prepared and submitted a dissertation for defense in 1941 on the topic: “Some indicators of metabolism in clinical scurvy”. Young employees of the department actively carried out their first scientific research. And then - war... From the first days of the war, a significant part of the staff and students were drafted into the army. I.Z. Ilyasov was among them.

E.S. Burkser was appointed as head of the department of Inorganic Chemistry, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, professor, who arrived in Ufa along with the evacuated Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Evgeniy Samoilovich Burkser

He held the position of head of Department of General Chemistry from 01.08.1941 to 15.08.1943, born 22.06.1887 in Odessa. Graduated from the Natural Sciences Department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Odessa University in 1909. Scientific interests: rare earth and radioactive elements.

More than 180 scientific papers. He received 2 People's Commissariat of Education awards for scientific work.

In 1922-1934 headed the department of Inorganic Chemistry at the Chemical Institute, then the Pharmaceutical Institute in Odessa.

In 1925, he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and in 1934 he was confirmed with the rank of professor.

In 1941, with the outbreak of war, the entire activity of the institute was restructured on a war footing. The period of study for students was reduced to 4 years, and the weekly study load of students reached 48 hours. At the end of October 1941, the 1st Moscow Medical Institute was evacuated to Ufa with its students and teaching staff and located on the basis of the Bashkir Medical Institute. Classes were held in the dormitory in two shifts, and students from the dormitory were moved to the apartments of Ufa students.

For two academic years, two medical institutes and their departments worked together in harmony. Along with their studies, students and teachers worked on clean-up days, helped industrial enterprises, agriculture, were on duty in hospitals and clinics, and participated in gratuitous donations. Despite the difficulties of wartime - lack of reagents, glassware, equipment, understaffing, interruptions in the supply of fuel, water, light - the department of General Chemistry continued to work successfully, carrying out educational, methodological and educational work. Independent work of students was widely practiced. To a certain extent, scientific work was also carried out. In the fifth volume of the “Collection of Scientific Works of the BMI” for 1943, an article “The influence of vapors and gases of Mount Yangan-Tau on the level of potassium and calcium in the blood” by E.S. Burkser and Sh.H. Meshcherova was published.

In August 1943 E.S. Burkser left for Moscow (re-evacuation), transferring the Department of General Chemistry to Associate Professor S.M. Moskovich
